In 1976 Growing up in Brooklyn The worst name we got called was “Frenchy” In 1986 after the Duvalier regime was ousted from Haiti. The Haitian refugee phenomenon gave us a new name, Boat people. I met a man whom is a survivor of such journey , all that came in the Boat he was in perished. He survived , but lost his foot to a great white In his own word” By the Glory of God”. He was rescued by the Cost Guard and place along with other Haitian refugees at Guantanamo bay. Where after six months in prison . Immigration officials granted him and some others, Political asylum. Today Jean his a Haitian American leaving the “American dream” From time to time his scar remind him of the price he had to pay in his search for , a better life.
